1998 Announcements

September 8

RCS continues it's partnership with the Ocean State Free-Net by hosting a work session to repair their donated Sun hardware. RCS already hosts the telephone line and answering machine that is used by the OSFN help desk, and provides storage space for the OSFN file cabinets. We are now also providing space for OSFN to colocate some Sun SparcServers that will be used as test and development systems. The work session to configure the Sun equipment will be on Wed. Sept. 9th at 6:00pm.

September 5

The Saturday, Sept. 5th edition of the Providence Journal has a feature article by staff writer Tim Barmann about RCS on the front page of the Business section. The article is accompanied by a photo of two of our members running the pdp-12.

The Journal has granted permission to RCS to reprint the text of the article here.

August 16

Starting with the next open house we are going to have a "theme of the month" where we will feature a particular aspect of the collection.

If you have any suggestions, send us a note.

For one of the months we will be featuring "blinkenlichts" front panels - the operator control consoles that were used to enter data directly into the core memory of the early systems.

July 19

Our flea market on July 18th was such a success that we are going to expand it for August. We will open at 10:00am on Saturday, August 15 and stay open until 4:30pm.

More stuff will be on display including 486 system boxes and networking gear. See our lists of some of the PC stuff and networking hardware that is for sale. Our collection of vintage computer equipment will, of course, be on display and we will have some of our classic systems running demos.

July 10

Starting with July our Open-House will also include a flea market where we will be selling our excess PC software, hardware and accessories. The hours will be extended and we'll be open from 11:30am until 4:30pm, and then we'll be back after dinner and open until late in the night.

June 5

The next open house is June 20th and we will be holding a TTY Clinic. We will be repairing and testing Teletype ASR-33 and other hardcopy terminals. Bring one down if you have one in need of repair, or just drop by to watch the restoration.

For the July 18th open-house we will be holding a flea market where we will be selling our surplus PC and networking gear.

January 1

As of midnight, 1 January, 1998, RCS is pleased to announce that it is now incorporated as a non-profit corporation under Rhode Island state law. Our official title is: "The Retro-Computing Society of RI, Inc."
